What is the Navamsa Chart (D9)?

The Navamsa chart — abbreviated as D9, where "Nava" means nine — is created by dividing each of the 12 zodiac signs into 9 equal segments (Navamsas) of 3°20' each. This produces 108 Navamsas total across the entire 360° zodiac. Each Navamsa is assigned a zodiac sign, and the planet that occupies a particular Navamsa in the Rashi chart takes on that Navamsa sign as its D9 position.

The Navamsa is universally regarded as the second most important chart in Vedic astrology — second only to the Rashi (D1) chart itself. Ancient texts like Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Jaimini Sutra both emphasize that no prediction should be made from the Rashi chart alone without confirming it in the Navamsa. A promise seen in the Rashi chart is only truly delivered if the Navamsa supports it.

What is the Navamsa Used For?

Marriage and spouse analysis. The 7th house of the Navamsa and its lord reveal the nature, appearance, and qualities of the spouse. The condition of Venus in the Navamsa (for a male chart) or Jupiter in the Navamsa (for a female chart) gives key insights into marital happiness.

Confirming Rashi chart promises. A yoga in the Rashi chart (like Gajakesari or Raja Yoga) that is also supported by the Navamsa is far more powerful. Conversely, a debilitated planet in the Rashi that is strong or exalted in the Navamsa (Neecha Bhanga in D9) delivers much better outcomes than the Rashi alone would suggest.

Dharma and soul purpose. The Navamsa Lagna and its lord describe the soul's dharmic orientation in this life. The 9th house and its lord in the Navamsa indicate the spiritual path and higher purpose that underlies this incarnation.

What is a Vargottama Planet?

A planet is Vargottama when it occupies the same zodiac sign in both the Rashi (D1) chart and the Navamsa (D9) chart. This happens in the first 3°20', the middle 13°20'–16°40', or the last 26°40'–30° of any zodiac sign (depending on whether the sign is in an odd or even group).

Vargottama is considered one of the strongest dignities a planet can have in Vedic astrology. A Vargottama planet is stable, consistent, and delivers its results with greater intensity and reliability. If your Lagna degree is Vargottama, your entire chart is considered especially powerful. SoulOS identifies all Vargottama planets in your Kundli automatically.

Navamsa and Marriage Timing

Beyond the Navamsa chart itself, the timing of marriage is typically read from the Vimshottari Dasha system in conjunction with the 7th house lords of both the Rashi and Navamsa charts. Marriage commonly occurs during the Mahadasha or Antardasha of the 7th lord from Lagna (Rashi), the 7th lord from the Navamsa Lagna, or Venus (natural karaka for marriage).

Transits of Jupiter and Saturn over the Rashi Lagna, 7th house, or 7th lord are also important timing triggers. If you are looking for insights on marriage timing, combine your Navamsa analysis with your Vimshottari Dasha periods for the most complete picture.
