What is Vimshottari Dasha?
Vimshottari Dasha is the most widely used planetary timing system in Vedic astrology. The word "Vimshottari" means 120 — the total number of years in one complete cycle. This 120-year cycle is divided among 9 planets, each ruling a main period (Mahadasha) of a specific length. The system was described by Maharishi Parashara in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, the foundational text of Jyotish.
The genius of Vimshottari Dasha is that it does not just show which planet is active — it creates a multi-layered nested timing system. Within each Mahadasha are Antardashas (Bhukti), within each Antardasha are Pratyantardashas, and these subdivide further into Sookshma and Prana Dashas. This gives Vedic astrologers an extraordinarily precise timeline to identify when specific themes, opportunities, and challenges are most likely to manifest.
The Nine Mahadasha Periods
- Ketu Mahadasha — 7 years: separation, spirituality, past life karma
- Venus (Shukra) Mahadasha — 20 years: relationships, beauty, wealth, pleasure
- Sun (Surya) Mahadasha — 6 years: ego, authority, father, government, health
- Moon (Chandra) Mahadasha — 10 years: mind, mother, emotions, public, travel
- Mars (Mangal) Mahadasha — 7 years: energy, courage, siblings, property, conflict
- Rahu Mahadasha — 18 years: ambition, foreigners, obsession, unconventional paths
- Jupiter (Guru) Mahadasha — 16 years: expansion, wisdom, children, teachers, luck
- Saturn (Shani) Mahadasha — 19 years: discipline, karma, delays, responsibility, old age
- Mercury (Budha) Mahadasha — 17 years: intellect, communication, business, skills
How Is Vimshottari Dasha Calculated?
The calculation begins with identifying the Moon's Nakshatra at birth. Each of the 27 Nakshatras has a ruling planet. The remaining balance of that planet's Mahadasha is calculated proportionally — based on how far the Moon has traveled through the Nakshatra's 13°20' span at the moment of birth.
For example, if your Moon is in Rohini Nakshatra (ruled by Moon) and has traveled exactly halfway through it, you begin with exactly 5 years (half of Moon's 10-year Mahadasha) remaining in Moon Mahadasha, then proceed through Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus, Sun, and back to Moon in the repeating cycle.
This is why your exact birth time is critical for Dasha calculation. Even a 30-minute error can shift Dasha balance dates by several months. SoulOS uses Swiss Ephemeris 2.10 to calculate the Moon's exact nakshatra position to sub-degree precision, giving you the most accurate Vimshottari Dasha available online for free.
How to Use Your Dasha Calculator Results
Once you generate your Kundli, scroll to the Dasha section. Find today's date in the Mahadasha and Antardasha columns to identify which planetary period you are currently running. Then look at where that Mahadasha planet sits in your Janam Kundli — its house, sign, strength, and any aspects it receives — to understand the quality of the period.
A strong Mahadasha lord in a good house (1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th) generally brings favorable outcomes related to that house's themes during its period. A weak, debilitated, or poorly placed Mahadasha lord in a dusthana house (6th, 8th, 12th) tends to bring challenges, delays, or transformations. The Antardasha lord modifies the experience within each Mahadasha sub-period.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Vimshottari Dasha?
Vimshottari Dasha is a 120-year planetary timing system used in Vedic astrology. Each of 9 planets rules a main period (Mahadasha) of specific years. It starts from the Moon's Nakshatra at birth and gives astrologers a precise timeline for when planetary energies activate in your life.
What is the sequence of Vimshottari Dashas?
The fixed sequence is: Ketu (7y) → Venus (20y) → Sun (6y) → Moon (10y) → Mars (7y) → Rahu (18y) → Jupiter (16y) → Saturn (19y) → Mercury (17y) → repeat. Your starting Dasha depends on the Moon's Nakshatra at birth.
Why is birth time important for Dasha calculation?
The Moon's exact position determines how much Dasha balance remains at birth. Even a 30-minute birth time error can shift Dasha dates by months. SoulOS uses Swiss Ephemeris for sub-degree Moon position accuracy.
What is the difference between Mahadasha and Antardasha?
Mahadasha is the main planetary period (6–20 years). Antardasha (Bhukti) is a sub-period within it. Each Antardasha is further divided into Pratyantar Dasha for even finer timing of life events.
