What is a Nakshatra?

Nakshatra means "that which does not decay" in Sanskrit — a reference to the fixed stars that form the backdrop of the sky. In Vedic astrology, the 27 Nakshatras are lunar mansions that divide the 360° zodiac into 27 equal segments of 13°20' each. The Moon passes through one Nakshatra approximately every day, completing the full cycle in one lunar month.

While the 12 zodiac signs (Rashis) describe broad archetypes, the 27 Nakshatras provide a far more nuanced layer of analysis. Each Nakshatra has its own ruling planet (Nakshatra lord), presiding deity, symbol, quality (Deva, Manushya, or Rakshasa), and characteristic expressions. The Nakshatra your Moon occupied at birth — called your Janma Nakshatra or birth star — is one of the most important indicators of your psychological makeup, instincts, and life timing.

Why Nakshatra Matters for Vimshottari Dasha

Your Moon's Nakshatra at birth determines which Vimshottari Mahadasha you begin life with — and how much of that first Dasha remains at the moment of birth. Each Nakshatra ruler corresponds to a Vimshottari planet, and the proportion of the Nakshatra the Moon has already transited determines the remaining Dasha balance.

For example, if your Moon is in Rohini Nakshatra (Moon-ruled), and the Moon has transited exactly 25% of Rohini at your birth, you have exactly 7.5 years (75% of Moon's 10-year period) remaining in Moon Mahadasha at birth. All subsequent Dashas follow in the standard Vimshottari sequence from there.

Nakshatra in Kundli Milan (Compatibility)

Nakshatra is the primary basis for traditional Indian marriage compatibility analysis (Kundli Milan / Ashtakoot matching). The 36 Gunas (compatibility points) are calculated from the Nakshatras of the bride and groom. A score of 18 or above out of 36 is considered acceptable for marriage; 24 and above is considered good.

The 8 Koota categories used in matching are: Varna (1 pt), Vashya (2 pts), Tara (3 pts), Yoni (4 pts), Graha Maitri (5 pts), Gana (6 pts), Bhakoot (7 pts), Nadi (8 pts).
