What is a Nakshatra?

Nakshatra means "that which does not decay" in Sanskrit — a reference to the fixed stars that form the backdrop of the sky. In Vedic astrology, the 27 Nakshatras are lunar mansions that divide the 360° zodiac into 27 equal segments of 13°20' each. The Moon passes through one Nakshatra approximately every day, completing the full cycle in one lunar month.

While the 12 zodiac signs (Rashis) describe broad archetypes, the 27 Nakshatras provide a far more nuanced layer of analysis. Each Nakshatra has its own ruling planet (Nakshatra lord), presiding deity, symbol, quality (Deva, Manushya, or Rakshasa), and characteristic expressions. The Nakshatra your Moon occupied at birth — called your Janma Nakshatra or birth star — is one of the most important indicators of your psychological makeup, instincts, and life timing.

The 27 Nakshatras and Their Ruling Planets

  • Ashwini, Magha, Mula — ruled by Ketu
  • Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha — ruled by Venus
  • Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha — ruled by Sun
  • Rohini, Hasta, Shravana — ruled by Moon
  • Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishtha — ruled by Mars
  • Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha — ruled by Rahu
  • Punarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada — ruled by Jupiter
  • Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada — ruled by Saturn
  • Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati — ruled by Mercury

Why Nakshatra Matters for Vimshottari Dasha

Your Moon's Nakshatra at birth determines which Vimshottari Mahadasha you begin life with — and how much of that first Dasha remains at the moment of birth. Each Nakshatra ruler corresponds to a Vimshottari planet, and the proportion of the Nakshatra the Moon has already transited determines the remaining Dasha balance.

For example, if your Moon is in Rohini Nakshatra (Moon-ruled), and the Moon has transited exactly 25% of Rohini at your birth, you have exactly 7.5 years (75% of Moon's 10-year period) remaining in Moon Mahadasha at birth. All subsequent Dashas follow in the standard Vimshottari sequence from there.

This is why knowing your exact Nakshatra and Pada is the foundation of accurate Dasha calculation. SoulOS uses Swiss Ephemeris to compute the Moon's exact degree to sub-arc-minute precision, giving you the most accurate Nakshatra assignment and Dasha balance available free online.

Nakshatra in Kundli Milan (Compatibility)

Nakshatra is the primary basis for traditional Indian marriage compatibility analysis (Kundli Milan / Ashtakoot matching). The 36 Gunas (compatibility points) are calculated from the Nakshatras of the bride and groom. A score of 18 or above out of 36 is considered acceptable for marriage; 24 and above is considered good.

The 8 Koota categories used in matching are: Varna (1 pt), Vashya (2 pts), Tara (3 pts), Yoni (4 pts), Graha Maitri (5 pts), Gana (6 pts), Bhakoot (7 pts), Nadi (8 pts). Nadi and Bhakoot are the most important — a Nadi dosh (both partners having the same Nadi) is traditionally considered a serious incompatibility that requires specific remedies. You can check compatibility using our Kundli Milan tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Nakshatra?+

Nakshatra is one of 27 lunar mansions in Vedic astrology. Each Nakshatra spans 13°20' of the zodiac. Your birth Nakshatra is the one the Moon occupied at your birth — it determines your Vimshottari Dasha starting point and shapes your psychological nature.

How many Nakshatras are there?+

There are 27 main Nakshatras, each with a ruling planet, deity, symbol, and qualities. Each is further divided into 4 Padas (quarters) of 3°20' each, giving 108 Padas total.

What is Nakshatra Pada?+

Pada is one of 4 quarters of a Nakshatra, each spanning 3°20'. Your Moon's Pada refines the Nakshatra's expression and is used for Vimshottari Dasha balance calculations and Navamsa chart analysis.

Why is Nakshatra important for marriage compatibility?+

Traditional Kundli Milan (Ashtakoot matching) is calculated entirely from the Nakshatras of the bride and groom. The 36 Guna points assess 8 categories of compatibility — with Nadi and Bhakoot being the most critical.
